Michelle Leone Huisman

A Canadian Female Photographer

Michelle Leone Huisman is an award-winning Canadian photo-based artist and community advocate based in Vancouver. A graduate of Toronto Metropolitan University (BFA Photo Arts, 1995/96) and Emily Carr University of Art + Design (Photographic Arts, 2009–10), Michelle’s work merges traditional photographic techniques with contemporary themes, offering a thoughtful exploration of memory, identity, and social connection.

Engaging with processes such as gum bichromate over platinum palladium, Michelle continues to push the boundaries of photographic expression by embracing alternative and historic processes that emphasize tactile storytelling and experimental aesthetics. Her work has been exhibited internationally and often intersects with her commitment to community engagement and advocacy. Michelle’s eclectic fine art projects reflect her belief in photography as a powerful medium for social commentary and personal reflection. Michelle is currently a resident artist at the SPAO: Photographic Arts Centre.
